The 4th stage of the Tour de France 2006 on July 5th took the remaining 172 riders from the Belgian Huy , best known as the destination of the spring classic Flèche Wallonne , over 207 km back to France to Saint-Quentin .
As on the previous days, the stage was dominated by a breakaway group for a long time. After Egoi Martínez attacked at 18.5 km, he was joined by Laurent Lefèvre , Cédric Coutouly , Christophe Mengin and Olympic track champion Bradley Wiggins . Martínez and Lefèvre, however, were the last "survivors" of the leading group, two kilometers from the finish.
Robbie McEwen secured victory in the sprint of the main field. There was also a fall of the New Zealand Crédit Agricole driver Julian Dean . With his tenth tour victory, McEwen also secured the green jersey of the best in points. The other jerseys were successfully defended by their wearers.
The sprinter Thor Hushovd , initially ranked fourth in the stage, was reset to last position after the race due to irregular sprints .
