In 1969 he returned to Germany and played in the 1969/70 season for Tasmania Berlin in the Regionalliga Berlin , where he scored 21 goals in 21 games. His attempt to make a name for himself at 1. FC Köln in the Bundesliga failed, however: In the 1970/71 season , John only made one substitution in the league and one in the UEFA Cup. He then returned to Berlin and played for Blau-Weiß 90 Berlin in the 1971/72 season . In the Regionalliga Berlin, John was one of the top goalscorers in his time, the early 1970s. After his return to Berlin in 1973, John played unsuccessfully for promotion to the Bundesliga with Wacker 04 Berlin until the end of 1975 and then in the 2nd Bundesliga . For Wacker he scored 29 goals in 49 games in the 2nd Bundesliga. In 1976 he still played for FC St. Pauli , where he scored five goals in 17 appearances in the 2nd Bundesliga.

As a coach, he led Hertha Zehlendorf in 1979 to the championship of the then third-class Oberliga Berlin . In the promotion games to the 2nd Bundesliga against OSC Bremerhaven , he failed after results of 5: 4 and 0: 1 only because of the away goal rule.
