The Regionalliga Berlin acted between 1963 and 1974 as one of the five regional leagues of the second highest football league level in the Federal Republic of Germany .

history

Until the introduction of the Bundesliga , there were regionally limited top divisions in Germany, the top teams of which played the German champions every year . After the introduction of the common first division, to which the best teams qualified themselves both athletically and according to regional aspects, these regional first leagues were converted into a second-class substructure of the Bundesliga.

The contract league Berlin , the top division until 1963, was renamed the Regionalliga Berlin and was henceforth the second highest division. Hertha BSC qualified as the top team in the municipal league for the Bundesliga, the remaining teams (except for two relegated teams) formed the ten-team regional league with three promoted teams.

In the first season, the teams competed against each other in three games, so that each club had to complete 27 games. In the following season, the mode was changed: After each team had played in a home and away game against each other, the league was divided into a five-club championship and a relegation round.

Tennis Borussia became champions that year 1964/65, but failed in the promotion round. Instead of them, Tasmania 1900 , although only third-placed, as last year's champions - i.e. without actual athletic qualifications - replaced the Herthaners condemned to relegation in the Bundesliga, so that the city of Berlin-West could continue to be represented in the top class. After only one season, however, “Tas” was relegated.

For the 1965/66 season, the mode was changed again after the league had been increased to 16 clubs. After one home and one away game, a total of 30 games, there were a. the qualifier for the promotion round and the relegated team.

It was not until 1968 that Hertha BSC managed to return to the Bundesliga after they had dominated the league until then, but failed in the promotion round. A year later, the number of clubs was initially reduced to 14, and then to 12 in the following season. They played 33 season games, as the mode from the first year was taken over again. 1972/73 they switched to the mode from the second regional league year, after a first round of 22 games, the league was divided into a six-club championship or relegation round. So each club came to 32 season games. However, only the bottom of the table rose from the relegation round. The championship third Tasmania had taken over financially through attempts to rise again, had to file for bankruptcy and broke up.

In the 1973/74 season, the last edition of the Berlin Regionalliga, a Berlin team was promoted to the German upper house for the second time: Tennis Borussia prevailed in the promotion round with one point ahead of FC Augsburg and Rot-Weiß Oberhausen , other participants were Borussia Neunkirchen and FC St. Pauli . After another mode change - again three games against each competitor, so a total of 33 season games - TeBe had 10 points ahead of runner-up Wacker 04 Berlin , who qualified for the second Bundesliga , which was newly introduced from the 1974/75 season . The remaining teams were integrated into the third-class Oberliga Berlin , which comprised 18 clubs in the first season .
