Per Røntved (born January 27, 1949 in Frederiksberg ) is a former Danish national football player on the position of Libero .

Career as a player

Røntved comes from Frederiksberg in Copenhagen . The then 18-year-old left-footer began his professional career in 1967 at Brønshøj BK from northern Copenhagen as a left winger. 1970, now promoted with his club, he completed his first international match for Denmark. Because there was a lack of defenders at Brønshøj, the powerful and powerful Røntved took the defensive and aroused the interest of foreign clubs with his interpretation of the libero position. In 1972 Røntved was voted Denmark's Player of the Year and after participating in the Olympic Games in Munich (with Allan Simonsens among others ) he moved to Werder Bremen , where he matured into one of the most respected players in the Bundesliga . In 1976 his then coach Otto Rehhagel said of him that apart from Franz Beckenbauer no other player in the world could fill the position of Libero as "elegantly and effectively" as Røntved. Accordingly, there was speculation about Røntved's move to Bayern Munich , especially as Beckenbauer left the club in 1977. However, Røntved stayed in Bremen and surprisingly moved to the second Danish division in 1979 to Randers Freja (now Randers FC ).

In 1979 he wrote the revelatory book "Fodbold på vrangen" (Eng. "The flip side"), in which he accused Werder Bremen players of doping .

During his time at Werder Bremen (1972 to 1979) he made 194 Bundesliga appearances and scored a remarkable 40 goals for a defensive player. He was also the first foreign player to be team captain at Werder Bremen. Noteworthy are his five own goals in the Bundesliga, which until today are only surpassed by Manfred Kaltz and Nikolče Noveski with six.

Røntved's national team career ended in 1982 under his former teammate Sepp Piontek . With 75 international matches, Røntved was Denmark's record international player at the time , but was later overtaken by Peter Schmeichel . He scored eleven goals as a defender and wore the captain's armband in 38 games.

After the playing career

Røntved had to end his active career in 1984 at the age of 35 after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage in a rope jumping competition with his brother Kim. After this tragic event, Per Røntved remained partially paralyzed and moved to the sporting management of various Danish clubs. He worked temporarily as a technical advisor for the Association of Swaziland in Southern Africa.
