Mario Bigoni ( July 18, 1984 - October 26, 2011 ) was an Italian football player . He gained notoriety because he was involved in the 2009 soccer betting scandal .

Career

Born in Italy, he began his career with the FC St. Gallen youth team . In summer 2006 he moved to what was then the Challenge League club FC Gossau .

Betting scandal

The Croatian betting mafia is said to have manipulated several games of FC Gossau. This was noticeable because the club lost various league games in a row, against strong and weak opponents. Gossau rose after the 08/09 season from the Challenge League to the first division . After the end of the season, Bigoni stated that a game last season was "not clean" (4-0 defeat by FC Locarno on May 24, 2009) and that he had received an offer to fix the match from a teammate, allegedly from the first goalkeeper Darko Damjanovic . It remained unclear whether he actually accepted the offer, but he was suspended by FC Gossau and banned by the Swiss Football Association .

death

Bigoni died under mysterious circumstances. On Saturday, October 8th 2011, he spent the evening with friends in a floating restaurant on the Rhine near Gaißau in Austria . Then he disappeared without a trace. Allegedly he was under the influence of alcohol the last time he was seen. Thereupon he was considered missing. Several search parties were looking for him after his disappearance. His lifeless body was found on Sunday, October 23rd, in the river bed of the Old Rhine near Rheineck . The site was one and a half kilometers from the place of his disappearance. The forensic medicine report that followed showed no signs of external influences. One assumes an accident.
