Mario Karner (born February 17, 1983 ) is an Austrian football player on the position of a defender . He currently plays at ASK Voitsberg in the third-class Austrian Regional League Middle .

Career

youth

Karner began his active career as a soccer player in 1992 with his home club SV (U) Kumberg in the market town of Kumberg , northeast of the provincial capital Graz . At the club he went through several youth league classes until 1999, but has since been given over to cooperation clubs. From 1994 to 1997 he was deployed in the junior division of SC Weiz and from 1997 was part of the youth team at SK Sturm Graz . Since Karner was still registered with his parent club, he could initially only play as a cooperation player with the traditional Styrian club in Graz. When he attended the Sturm Graz Academy from 1998, the registration requirements relaxed and only a year later he was registered with his new Graz club.

Club career

After visiting the academy, Karner joined the amateurs of SK Sturm Graz in 2001 and rose with his teammates in the 2001/02 season to the Middle Regionalliga, one of three seasons that also form the highest amateur league in Austria. In the 2002/03 season Karner was for the first time in the squad of the club's professional team. However, he never played in the Bundesliga during this season and had to be satisfied with a few appearances for the amateurs.

Almost two years later he was in the squad of the professional team again and made his Bundesliga debut in a 3-1 away win over SV Mattersburg on May 29, 2005 , when he was on the field from the start and from the 77th minute of the game Mario Kreimer, who also made his debut in professional football in this game , was replaced. During the last championship game of the season, a total of four Sturm players made their professional debuts. In addition to Karner and Kreimer, these were Thomas Friess and Gernot Suppan .

From 2005 to 2007 Karner played as a loan player at Kapfenberger SV , whose combat team was still in the second-rate first division at the time. Karner , who mainly acts as a central defender, played 32 league games for Obersteirer . Between the two years in Kapfenberg , he was registered with his home club in Graz for a little longer than a month, but was never used. At the end of the 2006/07 season , Kapfenberger SV would have relegated to the eleventh of twelve places in the third performance level. Due to the refusal of license by the GAK and its forced relegation to the regional league, as well as the simultaneous refusal of license by Vfb Admira Wacker Mödling , the Kapfenberger SV as a beneficiary was still entitled to play for the following season.

On January 31, 2007, he signed a loan contract with ASK Köflach , whose combat team was still represented in the Regionalliga Mitte at that time. During the remaining game days of the 2006/07 season Karner was only used in five league games and in the end had to relegate the team to the fourth-class Styrian national league due to the poor table placement .

In the following season 2007/08 the young central defender was on the pitch in 28 of a total of 30 possible league games and scored one goal. The last two championship games of the season Karner was no longer in action. After the first half of the season, Karner took over the captain's loop from his teammate Werner Seier.

In the summer break before the 2008/09 season , Karner signed a contract with the regional league team ASK Voitsberg, whose fighting team had just been promoted from the Styrian regional league. With the Voitsbergers he has been used in 51 championship games to date (as of June 4, 2010) and scored one goal.
