HAL Laboratory ( Japanese 株式会社 HAL 研究所 , Kabushiki-gaisha HAL Kenkyūjo , English HAL Laboratory, Inc. ) is a Japanese game developer .
As Nintendo's partner studio , HAL is responsible for some of the most popular games for Nintendo systems. The company is best known for Kirby , the protagonist of the game series of the same name, which already includes numerous titles. The Super Smash Bros. offshoots of N64, GameCube and Wii were also developed by HAL. The Adventures of Lolo series is also one of the works of the developer studio. HAL Laboratory was also involved in the development of a number of other games, including Pokémon Snap! for the Nintendo 64 .
The name "HAL" was chosen because these letters are exactly one place before the letters I , B and M in the alphabet and the company wanted to express that they are always exactly one step ahead of the computer manufacturer IBM .
