Tales of Vesperia ( Japanese テ イ ル ズ オ ブ ヴ ェ ス ペ リ ア Teiruzu obu Vesuperia ) is a role-playing game by the Japanese game developer Namco Bandai . It was released on August 7, 2008 in Japan, August 26, 2008 in the US, and June 26, 2009 in Europe. After Tales of Symphonia, it is the second console title in the Tales series to be released in Europe. The game has sold over 300,000 times (as of July 2009).

On September 17, 2009, a PlayStation 3 version was released in Japan. In January 2019 the game was released as a "Definitive Edition" for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. This edition includes all the content that was added to the PlayStation 3 version but was only available in Japan.

Combat system

The game's combat system is called the Evolved Flex - Range Linear Motion Battle System (EFR-LMBS). The battles take place in real time: both the characters and the opponents act simultaneously. By default, you move towards your opponent in a fixed line, similar to a 2D beat 'em up . However, you can move your own character freely on the field at any time at the push of a button and thus avoid the attacks of the opponents.

Similar to most beat 'em ups, your own performance during a fight is rated in the form of rank points: the damage suffered, the time required, the use of objects and many other parameters influence how many points you get at the end of the Fight. These points can be used for unlockable bonuses at the end of the game.

Depending on the current number of group members, up to four characters can take part in a fight. The player takes control of one of the figures. The others are either controlled by the AI or can optionally be controlled by other people with additional controllers. The tactic can be reconfigured at will. In addition, each figure has many individual special attacks that are called up in combat by pressing a button.

action

The action of Tales of Vesperia takes place in a world called Terca Lumireis. Humankind uses so-called blastia , ancient mechanisms created by an ancient civilization. There are different types of blastia: barrier blastia, aque blastia, bodhi blastia and the like. a. All Blastia use Aer as an energy source. Aer, like air, is invisible, but at the same time present everywhere. It serves as an energy source for blastia, but at the same time it is harmful to all forms of life in larger quantities or in a denser form in which it can even be seen.

The game begins with the fact that the Aqua-Blastia, which ensures the water supply for the lower city in the imperial capital of Zaphias, is stolen. Yuri Lowell, a resident of the Lower City, decides to look for the thief named Mordio. When attempting to catch the thief, he was arrested due to a misunderstanding and sent to prison. With the help of an old man who is also sitting in a cell in the dungeon, Yuri manages to escape. While trying to escape, he meets a girl named Estellise, whom Yuri's old friend Flynn knows. Yuri accepts the girl's request to help her find Flynn. A short time later, the two of them leave town with Yuri's dog Repede. On their search for Flynn, they meet Karol Capel, a member of the 'Hunting Blades' guild, and Rita Mordio, a sorceress whose name and reputation were abused by the thief.

It turns out that there are several thieves who stole Blastia from around the world. Yuri and the others find out who is behind the thefts: Ragou, magistrate of the port city of Capua Nor, and Barbos, leader of the 'Blood Alliance' guild. Together with Judith, a Krytia, and Raven, the old man from the dungeon of the castle, they finally manage to defeat Barbos, arrest Ragou and get the Aque-Blastia back.

A short time later, Estellise is attacked by a monster named Phaeroh. Yuri and the others decide to help Estellise find Phaeroh. On their search, they learn that the monster belongs to an intelligent race called Entelexeia. These watch over the world and take care that the aer production remains in balance. Some types of blastia, such as the Hermes blastia, cause an overproduction of aer, which would lead to the death of all life. It is also revealed that Estellise has the powers of the full moon child: she can use her skills without using a blastia; instead, she can control Aer directly. In the past, however, this has led to the emergence of the Adephagos: a being that consists of Aer and threatened to transform the entire world into Aer.

When Estellise found out about this, she was scared and withdrew from the others. Then she is kidnapped by Raven and taken to Commandant Alexei - the mastermind behind Barbos and Ragou as well as the person responsible for the production of Hermes-Blastia. Yuri and the others follow Alexei to an old temple where they are confronted with Raven. He reveals his true identity: His real name is Schwann Oltorain and he is captain of the Swan Brigade. After a fight they manage to escape from the collapsing temple. Later they meet Raven / Schwann, who survived the collapse of the temple. He asks Yuri to put an end to his life, but is spared this on the grounds that Raven's life is now in his hands.

Meanwhile, Alexei uses Estellise's ability to recover an ancient shrine called Zaude from the depths of the sea. Yuri and the others manage to save Estellise, but they cannot prevent Alexei from breaking the seal that sealed the Adephagos for over 1000 years. When Alexei sees the result of his act, he then commits suicide.

Yuri and the others find a way to destroy the Adephagos: They use Estellise's ability to create elemental spirits from the remains of deceased Entelexeia, the Apatheia. The consciousness of the Entelexeia is transferred into the elemental spirit and thus creates a new personality. On this basis they develop the plan to transform all Blastia around the world into elemental spirits in order to raise enough energy for the destruction against the Adephagos. However, this plan is threatened by a person named Duke: he revived an ancient flying fortress called Tarqaron in order to turn the life energy of all people in the world against the Adephagos. Yuri and the others have no choice but to stop Duke. On the highest level of Tarqaron, they meet Duke. You are able to defeat Duke and can ultimately destroy the Adephagos.
