Tales of the Abyss (OT: Japanese テ イ ル ズ オ ブ ジ ア ビ ス , Teiruzu Obu Ji Abisu ) is a video game in the Tales of game series by Namco . It first appeared on Playstation 2 only in Japan and the United States and was later reissued for Nintendo 3DS . The 3DS version was first published in Europe, but only in English. The series was also adapted as a manga and anime .

content

The game is about the young Luke fon Fabre, who lost his memory after being kidnapped 7 years earlier. He is the sole heir of a respected aristocratic family. Since that day he has led a secluded life, as his parents fear that he might be kidnapped again. One day his sword trainer is attacked during training and Luke is teleported to a distant location along with the attacker. The two team up to get back home. Another problem arises from the belligerence between two warring countries. Luke tries to avert this war during the game.

Game mechanics

The fights take place in real time, the player himself always takes control of one of the characters, mostly Luke. In the course of the game there is the possibility to play other characters. With the help of the ability "free walk" the characters can move freely on the battlefield at the push of a button, without this ability a character can only move forwards and backwards.

New edition for 3DS

The game was released in 2011 (Japan, Europe, Australia) and 2012 (USA) in a new edition for the Nintendo 3DS. There are hardly any changes to the original, but the game now supports the 3D function of the 3DS and can therefore be played in 3D. In addition, both screens are now used for different displays.

The English version was used for the German publication, both the voice output and the texts are completely in English, there is no German translation.

reception

The game received relatively high marks from critics. The average rating at Metacritic is 78/100 for the PS2 version and 75/100 for the 3DS version.

Namco Bandai himself saw the release of the 3DS version in Europe as a great success, according to an employee, the game sold unexpectedly quickly and well.
