Tales ( テ イ ル ズ ; Teiruzu) is a series of computer games also known as Tales of (series) ( 「テ イ ル ズ オ ブ」 シ リ ー ズ ; "Teiruzu Obu" Shirīzu) popular in Japan. The first title, Tales of Phantasia, debuted on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in Japan in 1995 . Nevertheless, the international marketing outside of Japan only took place with the title Tales of Destiny , which appeared for the PlayStation , in 1998 for North America and later in Europe in 2004, with Tales of Symphonia for the GameCube . The series is distributed by Bandai Namco Entertainment (formerly Namco ) and was developed by the subsidiary Namco Tales Studio until 2011. Since 2012, development has been centralized in Bandai Namco.

The character design comes from Kōsuke Fujishima and Mutsumi Inomata , producers are Hideo Baba and Makoto Yoshizumi and the composer of the series is Motoi Sakuraba . Originally the series was created by Yoshiharu Gotanda .

In addition to video games, the Tales franchise also includes anime , radio drama and manga adaptations.

Game elements

Gameplay

The Tales series is assigned to computer role-playing games and with each new release, expanded game elements have been added. Characteristic is the combat system known as the Linear Motion Battle System (LMBS), which changes a little or almost fundamentally with each new game. In the first part, Tales of Phantasia , a real-time combat system was introduced, which at the time was not common for a Japanese role-playing game.

The fights do not take place on the freely accessible playing field, so that when you touch an opponent who is visible on the playing field, you are shown in a separate battle scene. In Tales of Zestiria (2015), the fight took place on the field, so that no separate battle scenery was required. In some parts it is characteristic that you can move in battle and thus avoid some area-wide (magic) attacks. Elements of turn-based role-playing games in the form of chain capacity (also known as Chains - English for chains ) are found for example in Tales of Destiny and later titles again. These chains represent the number of skills that can be exercised with one command without being affected by real time. The characters of the Tales series usually use so-called Artes in battles , which are special attacks with their own sequences and cause greater damage than conventional attacks - in later parts, Artes can also be fused with several characters. Usually you only control one character; However, that changed with the release of Tales of Destiny , because it was now possible to change characters during combat.

In the Tales series all the playable characters can title , gaining by doing the prescribed for each title tasks. The tasks usually consist of achieving certain battle sequences, completing a prescribed number of monsters, reaching milestones such as a level limit or reaching certain starting points in the game's history. With these titles you can regularly collect points, which you can redeem in a grade shop after the game is over and exchange some advantages for a new playthrough. As an example, you can get twice the amount of experience after battles or unlock a Japanese soundtrack.

Most Tales -Videospiele have Skits ( eng. For skits ), which gets displayed to conversations among the characters in the form of (later animated) still images on the pitch. These conversations are mostly dramatic or comedic . These skits were introduced from Tales of Destiny , in later parts such as Tales of Xillia they were also synchronized with sound. Another element is the cooking system, where characters learn and perform cooking in order to make dishes that trigger effects in combat.

Subject

The Tales series is known for topics such as coexistence with different ethnic groups. Tales of Rebirth in particular deals intensively with the subject of racism . The scenario writer Hiramatsu Masaki said he was inspired by the ethnic crisis in Yugoslavia . Other pillars for every plot in the Tales series are issues such as justice and trust. According to statements, each Tales title should be linked to a current event from the world and addressed. The event is also intended to influence the respective titles of the video games.

The series does not have a comprehensive, self-contained plot, which means that the events take place in different worlds, with different characters. There are few parallels; so the events of Tales of Symphonia take place in the same timeline as Tales of Phantasia , whereas Tales of Zestiria and Tales of Berseria play in the same world, but the events take place in different time periods.

Video games

So far there are 16 main games in the regular Tales series. In addition to the main series, further offshoots were published. The following list shows only initial release dates; to some extent there are ports that were published a few years later in the same country, for example; these are omitted from this list.
