Ice Climber (Japanese ア イ ス ク ラ イ マ ー) is a video game from Nintendo that was first released as an arcade game in 1984 . It was ported to the Nintendo Entertainment System game console in 1985 as one of the first games for the system.

action

The condor stole all the food from the neighboring village and brought it to its nest on the next mountain. The Ice Climbers want to catch the eagle and bring back the food.

Gameplay

There are a total of 32 levels (or mountains) in which the player, as one of the two Inuit , Pepe (ポ ポ Popo) or Nana (ナ ナ), has to climb the ice-covered mountain peak and retrieve the vegetables from the condor. Equipped only with a hammer, it can be used to punch holes in stone walls and ice sheets to create points of ascent. Many obstacles such as topis, birds, polar bears, icicles falling from above and slippery ice surfaces make the ascent difficult. A 2-player mode is available, but players must decide whether to compete with each other or against each other to climb the mountain. Player 1 always plays Pepe, player 2 always Nana.

Ice climbers in Super Smash Bros. Melee

16 years after their first game, the Ice Climber duo has a playable guest appearance in Super Smash Bros. Melee for the Nintendo GameCube . Pepe and Nana are controlled together, but are considered a single figure. The player takes on the role of Pepe (or Nana, depending on your choice) and Nana (or Pepe) mimics all movements, unless the duo was separated over a long distance. If the computer-controlled Ice Climber is thrown out, the human player can continue to play with limited possibilities; but if the human player is thrown out, the computer-controlled Ice Climber disappears as well.

Your stage (world) is a graphically improved version of the old level design and background music. In Adventure Mode , topis and polar bears prevent the ascent of the mountain. The target test level is a one-to-one implementation of the old level design. In addition, the final boss from the original game Condor flies over the mountain.

The Ice Climbers were added to the SSB series to represent the original NES. They were preferred to franchises like Balloon Fight and Mach Rider .

The relationship between Nana and Pepe is unclear. It wasn't until Super Smash Brothers Melee that they were declared lovers. The Japanese SSBM homepage calls their relationship “ち な み に ポ ポ と ナ ナ は 、 お さ な な じ み 的 な 男女 だ そ う で す。。 友 達 以上 恋人 未 満 と い う か。”. Whether they are siblings, friends or lovers remains uncertain.

Pepe and Nana were both dubbed by Sanae Kobayashi (小林 沙 苗).

Super Smash Bros. Melee :

• The Ice Climbers Pepe and Nana are playable characters.
• The Ice Climber world is Infinite Glacier: Icicle Mountain - a vertically scrolling platform world.
• Two Ice Climber music tracks: Icicle Mountain plays the title music of the original game and the level music, the Ice Climber victory music is also the original victory music
• There are five Ice Climber-specific trophies: Ice Climbers, Ice Climbers (Smash 1), Ice Climbers (Smash 2), Polar Bear, Topi.
• The Ice Climbers' Target Test uses the original graphics from the NES game. The last target is carried by the 8-bit condor.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl :

• The Ice Climbers Pepe and Nana are playable characters.
• The Ice Climber World is Summit - a glacier peak that breaks off after a while, slides down the mountain and ends up in the sea. Although the summit can swim, a polar bear may pull it down further and further. If you stand in the water for too long, the fish from Balloon Fight tries to eat the person in question. After a while the peak flies to the same place as before and the same game starts over. There is also a destructible plate and the same aggressive icicles as in Ice Climbers.
• In the summit, vegetables appear in the same order as in the game, which have the same effect as food
• Three tracks: A newer version of the Icicle Mountain Medley, the Original Melee Version and the Victory Melody.
• Three trophies: Ice Climbers, Iceberg (Final Smash) and Vegetables.
• Summit is reputedly the top of Icicle Mountain.
• In the entrance animation, the Ice Climbers are carried onto the field by a condor.

• Animal Crossing : One of the collectable and fully playable NES titles is the original Ice Climber.

WarioWare range

• WarioWare, Inc .: Minigame Mania: A minigame is called: Grab the Condor's feet . Pepe has to grab the vegetables at the condor's feet.

• WarioWare: Twisted !: In a mini-game you have to hit the opponents with a hammer.
• WarioWare: Touched !: A mini-game is called "8-bit hero". Touch the pixel that is different from the picture above.

Republication

On September 1, 2011, Ice Climber was released as part of the so-called ambassador program for the Nintendo 3DS , where it can be downloaded through the eShop . Through the Ambassador Program, Nintendo 3DS is offering first-time buyers 20 free games, including ten for the NES and ten for the Game Boy Advance , which should be available by the end of the year. With this, Nintendo reacted to the sharp drop in the price of the 3DS, which took place on August 12th.

Trivia

• Outside of Germany, Pepes name is Popo.
• In rare cases the opponent loses a life if you jump on the opponent's head on the lowest level in the original Ice Climbers. This then falls through the ground.
• In Super Smash Bros. Melee and Brawl, the opponent can be frozen so that he can no longer be controlled.
• According to a Finnish newspaper, Ice Climber was the favorite game of the former President of Finland, Mauno Koivisto, for some time .
• Topis were seals in the original Japanese game, but they were redesigned as little yetis from the other versions due to animal cruelty . Topis were also seals in the beta version of Super Smash Bros. Melee.
