Mau Hodu Ran Kadalak ( Mau Hodu or Mau Hudo for short ), actually José Amancio da Costa (* in the 20th century; † 1999 ) was an East Timorese freedom fighter.

Life

Mau Hodu had four brothers and five sisters. His mother Aurelia da Costa came from Basarauai .

Mau Hodu was a member of the FALINTIL and led one of the combat groups against the Indonesian invaders. At the same time, at the end of the 1970s, he was one of the five leading members of FRETILIN , the political arm of the resistance. In 1983 Mau Hodu was political commissar of the Red Brigade ( Brigada Vermelha ).

After the destruction of the last bases of resistance by the Indonesians, the conquest of East Timor in 1979 was virtually over. The resistance was organized on Mount Aitana at a meeting between March 1 and 8, 1981. Only two members of the original FRETILIN Central Committee (CCF) had survived. Nine new members were selected at the conference, including Mau Hodu. He received further offices in the party and its armed arm, the Forças Armadas de Libertação Nacional de Timor-Leste (FALINTIL), Mau Hodu held several other offices: Head of the Executive Council for the Struggle and the Armed Front (Xefe Konsellu Ezekutivu ba Luta / Frente Armada CEL / FA) and Secretary of the Executive Council for the Struggle and the Resistance Front (Secretariu ba Komité Exekutivu Luta / Frente Klandestina CEL / FC).

In 1988 he became one of the deputy secretary of the Commission of FRETILIN (CDF). As political advisor to the Conselho Nacional de Resistência Ma Brille (CNRM), Mau Hodu called a meeting of the leaders of the resistance in Baucau in June 1990 . Here the Executive Committee of the CNRM for the resistance front (Comité Executivo da CNRM na Frente Clandestina) was founded, which from then on led the fighting against the Indonesians.

After the Santa Cruz massacre in November 1991, the Indonesians embarked on a large-scale operation to capture the leaders of the military resistance. On January 23, 1992, they managed to arrest Mau Hodu. He was later released. After the fall of the Indonesian dictator Suharto , Mau Hodu took part in the FRETILIN conference in Sydney in August 1998 .

After the East Timorese voted for independence from Indonesia in a referendum on August 30, 1999 , another wave of violence broke out by the Indonesian security forces. In the course of this, Mau Hodu was arrested and murdered. His body was initially gone. When bones associated with Mau Hodu were found, his family refused to take a DNA test.

In 2006 Mau Hodu was posthumously awarded the Ordem das Falintil .
