history

The Castel Merlet was built in the 6th century, making it the oldest moth in France. It was inhabited for about 150 years and then destroyed. The ruins of the Motte were discovered and excavated in 2007 and 2008. After Clovis I (466–511) had conquered parts of the Visigothic Empire, the Gévaudan was the border between Septimania , part of the Visigothic Empire , and the Frankish Empire . The Franks built the Castel Merlet on that border. During the excavations, remains of a Gallo-Roman oppidum were also found.

In 1237, Pope Gregory IX confirmed. (1167–1241) the diocese of Mende that it was owned by the church in La Malène.

The origin of the place name is controversial. In 1281 the village was mentioned as La Malena and in 1352 as Melena.

Attractions
