Vebron is a French mountain community with 204 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Lozère department of the Occitania region . In terms of area, it is the seventh largest in the Lozère department.

geography

Vebron is located in southern France in the Cevennes National Park on the edge of the Causse Méjean in the valley of the Tarnon river , 74 kilometers northwest of Montpellier , the capital of the Languedoc-Roussillon region, and 42 kilometers northwest of Alès . Neighboring municipalities of Vebron are Gorges du Tarn Causses with Montbrun in the northwest, Saint-Laurent-de-Trèves in the northeast, Rousses in the south and Fraissinet-de-Fourques in the southwest. The municipality covers 6966 hectares, the mean height is 926 meters above sea ​​level , the Mairie stands at an altitude of 665 meters. The hamlet of Salgas is north of the town center in the Tarn valley.

Vebron is assigned to a type Cfb (according to Köppen and Geiger) climate zone : warm, moderate rainy climate (C), fully humid (f), warmest month below 22 ° C, at least four months above 10 ° C (b). There is a maritime climate with a moderate summer.

history

Various prehistoric artefacts have been found in the municipality , including bronze axes, dolmens , menhirs and pottery shards. Excavations have been carried out on the Causse Méjean . It was found that the Tarnon was a border and that the valley was only slowly being developed.

In the Hundred Years War (1337-1453) the English penetrated through the Rouergue into the Cevennes , and the villages were plundered. This caused the population of Vebron to decline by the end of the 15th century.

In the 17th century, Vebron was reformed . In 1622 the Protestants felt threatened and fortified the village. The fortifications were destroyed in 1629 as a result of the Alès edict of grace . The Protestant Baron von Salgas was involved in the Cevennes War that broke out in 1685 after the Edict of Fontainebleau . In February 1703 the baron made the acquaintance of the camisard Abdias Maurel , known as Catinat . In May, after, the Baron was arrested and charged with the massacre in Fraissinet-de-Fourques having ordered. He was sentenced to forced labor, was only released in 1716 and went to Switzerland , where he died in 1717.

The village grew in the 18th century. Main branches of business were wool , silk and cotton processing . François Lozeran de Fressac was 1790 Maire Vebron and Salgas castle, the nobility and clergy protected the village from the effects of the French Revolution (1789-1799).

The Protestant church was reopened in 1823. In 1843 a passable road was built from Florac to Meyrueis .

During the Second World War (1939–1945), the Protestant pastor Chazel hid Jewish refugees.

Culture and sights

The place name developed from the Provencal word for " beaver ", Bebrou . There are indeed beavers in the Tarnon. The beaver is also the heraldic animal of the Vebronnais (inhabitants).

The Festival International du Film de Vébron has been held annually in July since 1988. The Ronde des Castors ('beaver round') race takes place in August .

building

Salgas Castle dates back to the 18th century and is privately owned. It was entered in the supplementary directory of the Monuments historiques ('historical monuments') in 1991. The listed parts are the facade, the roof and the gardens.

In Vebron there was the Saint-Pierre priory , of which only the abbey church remains today. Most of the monastic buildings were on the Causse Méjean.

Local products

In the municipality there are controlled designations of origin (AOC) for Pélardon , Bleu des Causses and Roquefort, as well as protected geographical indications (IGP) for lamb ( Agneau de Lozère ) and poultry ( Volailles du Languedoc ) .
