The population decline in the 20th century is mainly due to the remote location of the place and the loss of jobs as a result of the mechanization of agriculture .
economy
The inhabitants of the municipality of Saint-Privat-de-Vallongue lived for centuries as a self-sufficient living from agriculture: Grain was grown in the valleys, whereas the higher regions were used as pastures. In the 20th century, the former paths were turned into roads, which increased emigration. Today one still lives from a little agriculture and cattle breeding, but since the 1970s and 1980s tourism and in particular the rental of holiday apartments ( gîtes ) has played an important role in economic life.
history
The area was probably already roamed by hunters and gatherers in the Neolithic Age and perhaps even visited by shepherds .
After that, the remote place and its residents stayed away from the major events in the region, e.g. B. the Huguenot Wars in the 16./17. Century and the Camisard Wars at the beginning of the 18th century, largely untouched.
Attractions
- The place itself is a mountain village with some older stone houses.
- outside
- The parish church of Notre-Dame-de-la-Salette , consecrated to Our Lady of God and located about two kilometers southeast of today's center, is a Romanesque building from the 12th century. It consists of almost exactly hewn natural stones - in any case, an effort to create a regular masonry bond with stone layers of different heights can be seen. As a priory church, the building belonged to the no longer existing Benedictine monastery of Cendras . A short time after the completion of the original single-nave building, the church was given a south aisle with another apse . In 1662 it built just south adjacent to the church, a rectory ( presbytery ). The church construction suffered during the revolutionary years, but was restored in the 19th century. Both buildings have been recognized as Monuments historiques since 1979 .
- A holiday home complex consisting of 37 individual houses with a shared swimming pool was built in the vicinity of the church.
- In 1909 the current Protestant church ( temple ) was completed nearby . In the otherwise unadorned interior, the lateral women's galleries and the pulpit behind the altar dominate .
- Only a few of the foundations of the Château de Bellegarde , located in an imposing location about two kilometers northeast of the town, have survived .
