history
Dolmens and menhirs in the Causse , in the northern part of the municipality, indicate settlement in the Neolithic Age . Finds from the Bronze and Hallstatt Ages prove the continued settlement up to the Iron Age .
The area was from around 800 BC. Colonized by Gabali , a Gallic tribe belonging to the Arverni . They built a village on the banks of the Tarn, which perhaps later developed into Ispagnac. However, today's Ispagnac was built in 50 BC. Founded by Roman settlers. The Romans brought a certain type of plant production to the region, growing on terraces called bancels . This favored viticulture and fruit growing . The establishment of Roman roads promoted trade. Finds of clay pots and coins from Gallo-Roman times in the municipality are now partially exhibited in the museum in Mende.
The Romanesque church of Saint-Pierre in Ispagnac dates from the 12th century.
