The mountain village with 160 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) is located on the Corniche des Cévennes ridge on the southern edge of the Cevennes between Florac and Saint-Jean-du-Gard and around 70 kilometers north-west-north of the city of Montpellier .

The place name is derived from the Occitan word pompidor ( French palier ). This is the name given to a platform that can be reached via stairs.
