Andrew James Alberts (born June 30, 1981 in Minneapolis , Minnesota ) is an American ice hockey player who was under contract with the Vancouver Canucks in the National Hockey League until July 2014 .
Career
Alberts began his career as a hockey player on the Red Knights high school team at Benilde St. Margaret's School , Minnesota, for which he played for two years from 1997 to 1999. His teammates were u. a. former Krefeld Penguin DEL pro Martin Hyun and the Riddle Brothers drafted from St. Louis and Minnesota. Another two seasons, the defender was active in the United States Hockey League for the Waterloo Black Hawks. During the 2001 NHL Entry Draft , Alberts was selected as the 179th overall player by the Boston Bruins . The American then played from 2001 to 2005 for four years for Boston College in Hockey East , with which he won the Hockey East title once in 2005.
Towards the end of the 2004/05 season Alberts was first appointed to the Boston farm team , the Providence Bruins from the American Hockey League . There he made his debut in professional ice hockey. In the 2005/06 season Alberts made his debut in the National Hockey League for the Boston Bruins and was then a regular.
On October 13, 2008, Alberts was made in exchange for Ned Lukacevic and a four-round vote for the 2009 NHL Entry Draft to the Philadelphia Flyers . After a year with the Flyers, he joined the Vancouver Canucks in 2010 .
After the Canucks extended his contract for one season in the summer of 2013, he suffered a concussion in December 2013 from an irregular check by Brian McGrattan . Since then Alberts has not played a game and suffers from constant headaches . His contract, which expired in the summer of 2014, was not subsequently extended.
International
For the USA , Alberts took part in the 2006 and 2007 World Championships .
