Lise Marie Meloche (born April 19, 1960 in Ottawa , Ontario ) is a former Canadian kayaker , cross-country skier and biathlete . She took part in two Olympic Winter Games as a biathlete .

Athletic and professional career

Before her biathlon career, Lise Meloche was already successful as a five-year-old alpine skier and then in canoe racing. In 1979 she was Canadian junior champion in two-man kayaks . After she had some successes in cross-country skiing from 1983 onwards - among other things, she was seventh at the North American Championships and took part in a World Cup race, she began biathlon as a member of National Capital in 1984, won her first Canadian championship as well as her only title at North American Championships . In the same year she took part in the first women's world championships in Chamonix . With tenth place in the sprint, she immediately achieved a good result. Also in 1984 she made her debut in the biathlon world cup . Right from the start, she placed herself in the front ranks and in 1985 achieved her first podium finish in third place. In the 1986 season she also managed a second place and at the end of the season she was third in the overall ranking of the World Cup behind Eva Korpela and Sanna Grønlid . This remained her best place in the overall standings, even if she continued to occupy top places and in 1991 became the first Canadian ever to win a World Cup race.

At other world championships she achieved top positions again, but she was denied a medal win. In 1985 she was ninth in the sprint, in 1986 sixth in the sprint and seventh in the individual, in 1987 she was one place behind as seventh in the sprint and eighth in the individual. In her last biathlon year at the 1994 Biathlon World Championships in Canmore in her home country, where the non-Olympic team competitions were held, she came in sixth with the Canadian team (Meloche, Yvonne Visser , Inger-Kristin Berg , Jane Isakson ). Meloche also competed at the military world championships for Canada and won two medals, and for the runner-up world championship in 1988 there was also a bronze plaque in 1993.

Participation in the 1992 and 1994 Olympic Games in Albertville and Lillehammer were the highlights of their sporting life. In 1992 she was 47th and 50th in sprint and individual, with the 3 × 7.5 km relay in the line-up of Meloche, Myriam Bédard and Jane Isakson, she finished eleventh. Two years later she got much better results, although she made two mistakes in the 15 km individual in fifth place in the last shooting and fell back to eighteenth place in the final result. With this result, however, Meloche was in the shadow of her compatriot Myriam Bédard, who was double Olympic champion. In the sprint there was a 37th place to book and she was with Jane Isakson, Myriam Bédard and Inger-Kristin Berg 15th in the 4 × 7.5 km relay competition.

After the 1994 season she ended her biathlon career, in total she had started in about 200 races in the World Cup and made it into the top ten 21 times. Then she turned back to other sports competitions, including winning the Winterman Triathlon in 1995 .

Lise Meloche married biathlete and runner David McMahon and lives in Old Chelsea , Outaouais , Québec . She is a sports physiologist and kinesiologist and, together with her husband, runs a production company for training and instruction films in cross-country skiing. Together with him, she has produced several ski films and videos , some of which she herself participated in. She also teaches at the John McCrae Secondary School . She was inducted into the North Bay Sports Hall of Fame back in 1986 .
