Vesa Johannes Pöntiö (born December 7, 1967 ) is a former Finnish biathlete .

Pöntiö starts for the Viitasaaren Toverit club in his hometown Viitasaari and began biathlon in 1986. He made his debut in the 1991/92 season in the Biathlon World Cup . Although he regularly competed in the World Cup until the end of the 1996/97 season , he was only able to run into the points in his last season, he finished seventeenth twice in 20 km individual competitions, the first time in the biathlon that is part of the World Cup. World Championships 1997 in Brezno-Osrblie . These competitions were also the highlight of his international career with seventh place in the relay, which ran in the line-up of Ville Raikkonen , Vesa Pöntiö, Harri Eloranta and Vesa Hietalahti . Also in seventeenth, he crossed the finish line at the penultimate World Cup station in Nagano , again in the individual competition. These two top 20 results resulted in eighteen points in the overall World Cup in 55th place. With Finnish relays, Pöntiö achieved further top ten placements in international competitions, for example in March 1994 at the European Championships in Kontiolahti with fifth place. In his home country, too, he made it into the top ten in seventh place. Pöntiö came one place better at the same competition in February 1995 in Annecy - Le Grand Bornand at the 1995 European Biathlon Championships . His last international appearance was also at the European Biathlon Championships , in 1998 in Minsk-Raubitschy with 43rd place in sprint, 23rd place in the pursuit and 21st place as the best result in the individual competition, with the relay he placed eighth.

Pöntiö is Vääpeli of the reserve in the Finnish armed forces , he started in Vermont ( USA ) in 1993 - still as Kersantti - at the CISM Military World Championships , where he finished second in the biathlon. In addition, he regularly takes part in sport shooting competitions , both militarily as a sergeant, as well as in civilian events.

In 1997, Pöntiö surprisingly won the Finnish Pursuit Championship ahead of Ville Raikkonen and Paavo Puurunen . Even after his active career, he remained loyal to biathlon and won other national championship titles in various age groups. In 2002 he was named the best biathlete in the Finnish Workers' Sports Federation. He lives in Jämsä .
