Józef Rubiś first started for TS Wisła Gwardia Zakopane , later for WKS Legia Zakopane . He first took part in 1956 in Cortina d'Ampezzo as a cross-country skier in the Winter Olympics and was 34th over 15 kilometers, 23rd over 30 kilometers and on the side of Józef Gąsienica Sobczak , Tadeusz Kwapień and Andrzej Mateja in the relay race ninth. When biathlon became more important in the early 1960s, Rubiś switched to this new sport. In 1964 he competed in the individual Olympic Games in Innsbruck and finished sixth. At the Biathlon World Cup in Elverum in 1965 , he won the bronze medal in the last unofficially held relay competition with Stanisław Szczepaniak and Gąsienica Sobczak behind the teams from Norway and the Soviet Union. A year later he was able to win the silver medal with the relay with Szczepaniak, Gąsienica Sobczak and Stanisław Lukacztzyk behind Norway. After his playing career, he became a coach.
