The 16th Nordic World Ski Championships were held in Zakopane from February 11th to 19th, 1939 . This was the second time that the Polish town hosted the Nordic World Ski Championships.

The Scandinavians dominated as usual cross-country competitions, where it twice gold for Finland and one for Norway was. But in ski jumping and Nordic combined, two athletes who competed for Germany won . However, this was only possible because the reckless power politics of the National Socialists in the previous year had resulted in the so-called incorporation of other national areas. Josef Bradl , the world champion in ski jumping and the first jumper in the world over the 100 m mark, had previously had Austrian citizenship and Gustl Berauer , who won the Nordic combined, had Czechoslovak citizenship .

In 1939 in Zakopane, the Nordic World Ski Championships - partly as part of the Winter Olympics - were held for the last time in an annual rhythm. The interruption caused by the Second World War ultimately led to the fact that it was initially held every two years, alternating with the Winter Olympics. From 1985 on, two world championships in Nordic skiing took place between the Olympic Games in the odd years.
