The Nordic World Ski Championships in 1939 were a Nordic Combined competition that took place in Zakopane , Poland , from February 11th to 19th .

In the 12th edition of the Nordic Combined as a competition of the Nordic World Ski Championships , 38 athletes started cross-country skiing over 18 km, which the Finn Erkki Mäkinen won just ahead of Olaf Hoffsbakken and John Westbergh . The later medal winners followed on ranks five to seven.

In ski jumping 35 athletes started the race, of which Albert Burk and Jan Marek after falls in the first passage in the following competitions no longer participated.

The combined jumping was decided by Stanisław Marusarz from Poland . In the squares followed Hans Lahr from, incorporated the German Reich Sudetenland and Stanislav same age cousin Andrzej Marusarz .

Gustl Berauer , also from the Sudetenland, achieved sixth place in cross-country skiing and fourth place in ski jumping and thus achieved the best average performance for the first German ski world champion in Nordic combined as well as in the Nordic disciplines . Second place went to the Swede Gustav Sellin with ranks seven (cross-country skiing) and five (ski jumping) in the individual disciplines. Third place went to Magnar Fosseide from Norway.

The favored Norwegian team arrived in Zakopane after the official training session. The organization of a special training only for the Norwegian team, offered by the Polish organizers, was rejected by their team leaders with the obscure reason that the hill was too big and the landing was therefore not safe. From the point of view of the Norwegian team leadership it seemed as if it was safer for their combination jumpers to make the first jump in the competition and not in the training. In the Norwegian sports newspaper “ Sportsmanden ” it was reported that the organizers angrily asked “Are the Norwegians crazy?” In fact, three out of four Norwegians (Hoffsbakken, Odden and Kvanlid) fell on their first jump and lost their chances for a medal .
