Michał Górski (born September 15, 1911 in Zakopane , † March 19, 1985 ibid) was a Polish Nordic skier .

Career

Górski already combined his two passions, skiing and architecture, in his youth. After graduating from the local secondary school in Zakopane , he studied at the State Building School in Poznan and at the Technical University of Warsaw , where he successfully completed the course in architectural engineering. In addition, he started for TS Wisła Zakopane in cross-country skiing and Nordic combined in national and international competitions.

Athletic career

Górski won his first medal at the Polish Nordic Ski Championships in 1931, where he was runner-up in the 5 × 10 km relay and third in the combination. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1935 in Vysoké Tatry , he proved his class. He finished 23rd in the 18 km cross-country skiing and 18th in the Nordic Combined. He was also seventh with the 4 × 10 km relay. At the 1936 Winter Olympics in Garmisch-Partenkirchen , Górski was only used in cross-country skiing. He was able to confirm his placements from the previous year with the 22nd place in the individual and the seventh place together with Bronisław Czech , Stanisław Karpiel and Marian Woyna-Orlewicz in the relay. In February 1939 he took part in the Nordic World Ski Championships in Zakopane, his home country. While he reached a remarkable seventeenth place in the combination, he landed in 18 km cross-country skiing behind on the 70th place. About a week later he started at the academic world championships in Lillehammer , where he finished seventh in ski jumping and eighth in cross-country skiing over 18 kilometers.

Second World War

When the Second World War broke out with the attack on Poland in September 1939 , Górski initially fought against the National Socialists . He survived and spent the remainder of the war in Zakopane.

Career as an architect

After the end of the Second World War, Górski devoted four years to rebuilding Warsaw, especially the hospitals in the Polish capital. In Zakopane he founded the municipal construction company and created new tourist and sports facilities there. From 1957 he was an employee of the Central Sports Center in Zakopane.

Personal

His wife Anna , with whom he had a daughter, is the creator of the neo- Zakopane style in architecture. Górski was awarded the Golden Cross of Merit. He was buried in the New Cemetery in Zakopane.
