At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1938 , which took place from February 25th to 28th in Lahti , Finland , a Nordic Combined competition was held.
At the 11th edition of the Nordic Combined as a competition of the Nordic World Ski Championships , 54 athletes started cross-country skiing over 18 km, which Olaf Hoffsbakken won with almost three minutes ahead of John Westbergh and Magnar Fosseide . Hans Vinjarengen , who was third in the final ranking , came in fifth.
52 athletes took part in the jump run. The Finnish Timo Murama decided the combined jumping for himself. Pole Stanisław Marusarz and Norwegian Torstein Skinnarland followed on the places . The ranks six and seven went to the Austrian Walter Delle Karth and the German Bohemian Hans Lahr . Because of the long-running regulations, none of the top ski jumpers came into question for the decision about the overall victory.
With the help of his lead in cross-country skiing, Hoffsbakken was crowned the world champion of Nordic combined in 1938 with the 21st place jump. It remained the greatest success of his career. The Swede Westbergh was also satisfied with rank 23 in jumping to the silver medal and thus his career highlight. The best jumping performance of the medalists was shown by 33-year-old "old star" Hans Vinjarengen with 12th place. With the bronze medal after his world championship titles in 1929 and 1930, as well as the bronze in 1934, he won his fourth World Cup medal.
The best performances of the Central Europeans showed in the overall ranking of the Swiss Adi Gamma and the German Bohemian Gustav Berauer with the ranks 14 and 15.
