At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1938 , which took place from February 25 to 28 in Lahti , Finland , three cross-country skiing competitions were held.
The cross-country skiing competitions were all dominated by the Scandinavian countries, Finland, Norway and Sweden, who shared the medals among themselves. The best performances by Central Europeans in the individual competitions were a 34th place for Vincenzo Demetz over 18 km and a 24th place for Bohumil Musil in the endurance run. The Swiss relay achieved their best result so far in the relay competition with fourth place, but was more than 11 minutes behind the team from Finland, which remained successful before Norway and Sweden.
The Finn Pauli Pitkänen crowned himself with gold in the singles over 18 km and in the relay competition as double world champion. The 1936 relay Olympic champion Kalle Jalkanen also won two medals with victory in the endurance run over 50 km and third place in the competition over 18 km.
Cross-country skiing 18 km
Date: Saturday, February 26, 1938;
Participants: 213 named; 188 started; Rated 187;
The constant snowfall made the conditions for the participants worse and worse. Above all, runners with back numbers had practically no chance of a top spot. The big favorite Pauli Pitkänen was not impressed by this, and despite the adverse weather situation, he won the race by a large margin.

Date: Thursday February 24, 1938;
Participants: 12 teams registered; 11 started; 11 rated;
Austria finished ninth behind Poland with the team Hans Jamnig , Hans Obermann , Hugo Sonnweber and Rudolf Wöss . It was followed by the relays from Estonia and Latvia .
Finland renounced its stars Pekka Niemi and Kalle Jalkanen, both of whom had won silver with the relay at the 1937 World Championships. In their place, Matti Lauronen and Pauli Pitkänen completed the team.
In the Swedes, Holmfrid Olsson I , who was supposed to run in the third round, was rejected by the start judge because his report was apparently not submitted in time. Sigurd Nilsson had to be called in for him at short notice , but he had not waxed his skis optimally for the competition and had major problems in the race.
