Herbert Leupold

Herbert Leupold (born June 20, 1908 in Wüstewaltersdorf ; † December 22, 1942 in Navaginskaya / Krasnodar ) was a German cross-country skier .

Originally from Oberstaufen , Leupold reached the Nordic World Ski Championships in Innsbruck in 1933 in the 4 × 10 km relay together with Walter Motz , Willy Bogner sr. and Josef Ponn took fourth place and won a year later at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Sollefteå in the same discipline with Walter Motz, Josef Schreiner and Willy Bogner sr. the silver medal . At the Olympic Winter Games in 1936 he reached in the 4 × 10 km relay with Friedl Däuber , Willy Bogner sr. and Anton Zeller took sixth place and, together with Johann Hieble , Hermann Lochbühler and Michael Kirchmann , competed in the military patrol demonstration competition , in which the German team achieved fifth place. He was also the German champion in 50 km cross-country skiing in 1936, 1937 and 1939.

During the Second World War he fought on the Eastern Front , most recently in the Caucasus region . After being seriously wounded, he was transferred to a military hospital and died there in late 1942.
