The Italian relay did not start promisingly, because starting runner Albarello got tangled up with Jochen Behle at the start , was 40 seconds behind, but was then in the lead; Ploner was only overtaken by Aunli 800 meters from the finish. There was also great jubilation among the Austrians, who a year earlier had torn a gap of over 9 minutes at the Olympic Games in Sarajevo as eleventh.
