Hole had his first international success at the Junior European Championships in Murau in 1978 . There he won the silver medal with the relay. At the Junior World Ski Championships in 1979 in Mont Sainte-Anne , he won the bronze medal with the relay. He ran his first of 18 individual World Cup races in February 1983 in Sarajevo , which he finished in ninth place over 30 km. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1985 in Seefeld in Tirol , he achieved 14th place over 15 km. In March 1985 he was third with the season in Oslo . In the 1985/86 season he came in five individual World Cup starts, three times in the top ten. He achieved his only podium place in the World Cup singles in Falun with third place over 30 km classic. He also took second place in the relay in Falun. At the end of the season he achieved his best overall ranking with tenth place in the overall World Cup. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1987 in Oberstdorf , he ran in 11th place over 50 km freestyle. He completed his last World Cup race at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary . There he finished 31st place over 30 km classic. Two years later he won the Finlandia-hiihto classic over 45 km.
At Norwegian championships he won over 15 km in 1985 and over 30 km in 1986. In addition, he was second and four times third over 50 km. With the season of Geilo, he came second in 1985 and third in 1986.
