The Finnish team was the big favorite after winning 1934, 1935 and 1936. Sven Hansson ("Lima-Hansson") gave Sweden the lead on the first lap, while Pekka Niemi looked unusually sluggish. The big surprise was Giulio Gerardi's second place . Oskar Fredriksen put Norway in the lead on the next lap, although Klaes Karppinen made strong gains. On the third track the new Finnish star Jussi Kurikkala showed a strong race and took the lead from Sigurd Røen . A few days later he became world champion in Nordic combined. In the last round there was a tactical battle between Kalle Jalkanen , who had overtaken the seemingly unassailable Norwegians at the Olympic Games the year before, and Lars Bergendahl , the nephew of the legendary Lauritz Bergendahl . For the first, if not last, time in the season's history, the front runners tried to stand for 10 to 15 seconds before Jalkanen got tired of waiting. Bergendahl was about a kilometer away when he ran uphill at full speed and achieved enough lead for the varied terrain that followed.
