Location and surroundings

The refuge is located in the central area of Monte Baldo on the southern flank of Punta Telegrafo about 50 meters in altitude and only a few minutes' walk below the summit on the edge of a former glacier basin.

At 2147  m slm altitude, it is the highest hut on Monte Baldo. Next to the rifugio there is a small church dedicated to Saint Rosa of Lima .

history

Rifugio and Santa Rosa Church

The first plans to build a refuge at the Telegrafo go back to 1891. After the Verona section of the CAI had raised the necessary funds for the construction and the building site had been made available by the municipality of Castelletto di Brenzone, the first groundbreaking took place in July 1897. On September 26, 1897, the Rifugio could already be inaugurated. It was dedicated to the two botanists Francesco Calzolari and Giovanni Pona , who pioneered the study of the flora of Monte Baldo. The proximity to Verona, the railway line to Caprino Veronese had existed since 1889 , led to a rapidly increasing number of visitors, so that the hut was soon too small and had to be expanded for the first time in 1907. Another expansion took place in 1912.

During the First World War it was used as accommodation for the Italian army . In 1926 the Rifugio had to be extensively restored, it was expanded for the third time in its history and the small church of Santa Rosa, built next door in 1901, was rededicated. After the Second World War, the refuge was reopened after the major damage had been repaired, for example the roof had been removed during a storm. In 1966 the aging rifugio was completely rebuilt and renamed after Gaetano Batana, whose son donated a considerable amount for the new building. To mark the centenary, 1997 saw the construction of the new material ropeway, among other things.
