At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1934 , which took place from February 20th to 25th in the Swedish city of Sollefteå , three cross-country skiing competitions were announced. The Scandinavian participating countries were able to divide the medals almost entirely among themselves again. Only the German 4 × 10 km relay managed to break through the Nordic dominance by surprisingly winning the silver medal behind Finland.
The Finn Sulo Nurmela became double world champion in 1934 with a victory in cross-country skiing over 18 km and as part of the victorious Finnish relay team. Veli Saarinen crowned his career with gold in the relay and silver over 18 km. He came to a total of eight podium places at the World Ski Championships. Martti Lappalainen completed the Finnish trio of victories in cross-country skiing over 18 km with third place.
The endurance run over 50 km saw the two Swedes Elis Wiklund and Nils Englund in the front. For Wiklund it should remain the only medal at the World Ski Championships, but he was crowned Olympic champion in Germany in 1936. Englund, the two-time world champion from Innsbruck in 1933, had to be content with a second and a third place this time. Third place went to the Finn Olavi Remes . For him it should be the only podium finish at the World Ski Championships.
In the relay race, which was held for the second time, the Finnish team retained the upper hand with a superior lead of around eleven minutes. The second place for the German team meant the great sensation and the best placement for the German Ski Association at the FIS races and World Ski Championships that had been held up until then. This success came about on the one hand due to a mishap of two relay runners from the Norwegians and Swedes, who took a wrong turn at one point and lost valuable time, and on the other hand because of the fairness of the Norwegian Arne Hovde , who was on the track , who called out to the German Leupold about the same mishap preserved.

The surprising second place in the German relay team was Germany's greatest success in Nordic competitions at the World Ski Championships. Viktor Schneider won the first and only medal in Nordic competitions in 1927 in cross-country skiing over 18 km in Cortina d'Ampezzo .
This success was made possible by the two final runners of the Norwegian and Swedish relay teams , Oddbjörn Hagen and Arthur Häggblad , who just ran out of a designated junction and only noticed their mistake after about 3 km. In the meantime, the German final runner Herbert Leupold had run out of ten minutes. This, however, with the fair assistance of the Norwegian Arne Hovde , who was on the route , who pointed Leupold, who also threatened to branch off incorrectly, on the right track. Hagen and Häggblad had a brilliant race and were able to catch up on Leupold for about eight minutes, but in the end it was only enough for a final sprint for third place. Here Hagen was first in front, but seemed to have been beaten by a few cm by the Swede at the finish line. The jury decided on a tie, which would have meant third place for both of them. A protest was lodged against this decision. Today Sweden ranks third and Norway fourth at the same time.
