Markus Moarli Maier (born June 27, 1911 in Salzburg ; † January 2, 2010 in Trostberg , Germany ) was a Nordic and Alpine skier.
Career
Maier drew attention to himself as a child when he won a ski jumping competition held on Mönchsberg in the city of Salzburg . In the 1930s Maier was one of the best alpine and especially Nordic skiers in Austria. At the club level, he belonged to the Salzburg Ski Club and later to the Innsbruck Ski Club.
Mentioned in the then still FIS races Ski Championships in Innsbruck in 1933 he took up only in the Nordic disciplines and fought in the Nordic combined with ninth place the second best World Cup result of Salzburg composer in this discipline by Peter Radacher I , who in 1925 in Johannesbad the could reach seventh rank. In addition, he finished 48th in cross-country skiing over 18 km and 55th in ski jumping on the Bergiselschanze .
In 1934 he finished in the overall ranking of the Austrian ski championship in Mallnitz , which came in third place behind Hellmut Lantschner and the big favorite Hans Hauser as part of a three-way combination of cross-country skiing, ski jumping and downhill skiing . In the downhill and gate run of the Austrian Ski Association , traditionally carried out together with the women's championship , in which, however, no Austrian championship title was awarded for the men before 1938 because this was fought within the framework of the Nordic disciplines, Markus Maier achieved both in 1934 on the Schneeberg in Lower Austria Overall ranking behind Peter Radacher II , as well as in the downhill run behind Hannes Schroll and in the slalom again behind Radacher in each case second place. At the Ski World Championships in Sollefteå in 1934 he was 25th in Nordic Combined and reached 105th in cross-country skiing over 18 km and 55th in ski jumping.
At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Vysoké Tatry in 1935 , he came only 48th in cross-country skiing over 18 km. In combined jumping he fell and had to give up.
At the Austrian state championship in 1936, he again took third place behind Hans Hauser and Peter Radacher II with a victory in combined jumping and good performances in cross-country and downhill skiing . In the same year Maier started at the Olympic Winter Games in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and came 25th in the Nordic Combined.
The Austrian championships in Bad Ischl in 1937 represent Maier's best result at state championships. After an average performance in downhill skiing, he finished second in cross-country skiing and with third place in ski jumping came second overall behind Andreas Krallinger . At the ÖSV main association run in 1937 , Maier finished fourth in the slalom and fifth in the alpine combination, behind German world-class skiers like Rudi Cranz , Franz Pfnür and Gustav Lantschner .
Private
Maier was a son of the post office servant Markus Maier senior , who came from Freinberg in Upper Austria and was resident in the Gnigl community at that time . and his wife Crescentia from Lohnsburg .
In February 1941 he married his Elise in Salzburg.
In August 2005 he celebrated his 94th birthday at the Hotel Kaiser Karl in Großgmain together with his sports comrade Fred Rößner , who was equally old but who died soon afterwards . Maier spent his old age in Bavaria where he died at the age of 98.
