In the same year Maier started at the Olympic Winter Games in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and came 25th in the Nordic Combined.

The Austrian championships in Bad Ischl in 1937 represent Maier's best result at state championships. After an average performance in downhill skiing, he finished second in cross-country skiing and with third place in ski jumping came second overall behind Andreas Krallinger . At the ÖSV main association run in 1937 , Maier finished fourth in the slalom and fifth in the alpine combination, behind German world-class skiers like Rudi Cranz , Franz Pfnür and Gustav Lantschner .
