Kolterud grew up as the son of a ski-loving family. At the Norwegian Junior Championships in 1928 he won bronze in ski jumping. Three years later he won the silver medal in the individual combination behind Johan Grøttumsbråten at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Oberhof in 1931 . At the Olympic Winter Games in Lake Placid in 1932 , he narrowly missed the medal ranks in the combination and ended up fourth. After he had finished his active career, he made various trips to England and the United States together with the figure skater Sonja Henie . In 1942 he was active in the Norwegian film production company Trysil-Knut as a stuntman for the main actor and took over all the ski scenes for this. He then worked in a sports shop and later in a bank in Oslo .
