Johann Burgauner (born October 18, 1812 in Castelrotto , † May 13, 1891 in Brixen ) was a South Tyrolean painter.

Life

Burgauner, whose father was a master baker, attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich (entry on April 4, 1845) in painting under Professor Joseph Schlotthauer . Around 1850 he was head of the drawing school in Ortisei in Val Gardena .

In old age he moved to Brixen, where he died at the age of 88. One of his nephews was the painter Eduard Burgauner (1873–1913).

Works

He portrayed numerous important personalities of the time. Among other things, he portrayed the Val Gardena order wife Anna Maria Pesch Lautzer (1773-1836), matriarch of the family Moroder-Scurciá . The Merano Museum owns two oil paintings and numerous hand drawings by him.

Burgauner created altarpieces for the parish church in St. Christina in 1848, for the church in Eppan and the monastery church in Maria Steinach near Meran. In 1845 he also painted the Stations of the Cross for the parish church of St. Christina.

For the parish church of Castelrotto he painted the painting Heart of Mary .

In 1848 he painted the flag of the Ortisei rifle company, which is kept in the Val Gardena Museum.

The ceiling paintings of the Maria Hilf Church in Seis are by Johann Burgauner (1849).

For a family chapel in Überwasser he painted a picture of the Madonna based on the miraculous image of Mariahilf .
