The Ladin Museum Val Gardena - Museum de Gherdëina - in the Cësa di Ladins in the center of Ortisei in Val Gardena , South Tyrol , has existed since 1960 and houses collections on the cultural and natural history of the valley. The museum building Cësa di Ladins was built in 1953 by the Union di Ladins de Gherdëina also for the purpose of housing a museum for Val Gardena.

You can see the crucifix of Sëurasas by Vinzenz Peristi and Baptist Walpoth (1932), the crossways reliefs by Vinzenz Moroder (1921) and an oil painting by the painter Josef Moroder-Lusenberg (1846-1939) with a view of St. Ulrich around 1860, created in 1925.

The first exhibition room is dedicated to the baroque beginnings of sacred art in Val Gardena. The original sculptures from St. Jacob's Church are on display . These are works by the local sculptor dynasty of the Vinaz , who dominated sacred art in Val Gardena between 1650 and 1800 . You can also see the original altarpiece from the St. Jacob's Church by Franz Sebald Unterberger (1751) from Cavalese . The older workshop of the Trebingen sculptor dynasty is documented with four valuable figures of saints (around 1700).

2. Showroom

The second exhibition room offers a foray into historical art in Val Gardena from 1650 to 1950 and shows in the first showcase religious small sculptures from the workshops of the baroque sculptors Trebinger (17th century) and Vinazer (17th / 18th century).

A selection of nativity figures, crucifixion groups , chandelier angels, candle holders, clock stands , picture frames , caricatures , allegorical figures, depictions of animals, etc. v. m. provides an insight into the folk carving of the 18th and 19th centuries. Manufactured at home, it was first sold across Europe by traveling traders and later via a complex business network. Including a Pietà by Jakob Sotriffer, founder of the first drawing school in Val Gardena in 1825.

The first half of the 20th century is represented by two collections of works by the sculptors Albino Pitscheider (1877–1962) and Luis Insam (1901–1950). The traditional costumes from the workshop of Josef Moroder-Lusenberg (around 1900), the Christmas cribs by Luis Anton Insam and the Christmas crib altar by his son Luis Insam as well as the Christmas crib by Vinzenz Peristi are noteworthy.

The third exhibition room is reserved for the natural history area. A rich collection of local fossils , rocks and minerals provides an insight into the geological structure of the western Dolomites . Noteworthy among the fossils are charred plant remains ( Ortiseia ) from the layers of the Val Gardena Formation , gastropod prints, a fossilized fish (Archaeolepidotus leonardii Accordi), the more than 280 million year old skeleton of an ichthyosaur from the Buchensteiner layers of the Seceda as well as coral and ammonite finds from the Puez group . In addition to a cross-section of typical minerals from the Alpe di Siusi , this room also contains a valuable collection of minerals from other sites in the Alpine region (including rock crystal from the Ahrntal valley , geodes from Teis ). Furthermore, prepared forest animals (including an albino deer) and native birds, a butterfly collection and a historical herbarium give an insight into the diversity of the alpine fauna and flora.

2nd Floor

The early baroque Lenten veil from the St. Jacob's Church in Val Gardena (around 1620/30) is hung in the staircase , the only completely preserved testimony of its kind in South Tyrol.

The archaeological section shows the Stone Age finds from Plan de Frea on the Grödner Joch , which are among the most important traces of finds in the Val Gardena area (8000-5000 BC), as well as unique evidence from the Bronze Age such as the bronze dagger from the Balèst mountain (around 1300 BC). BC) and the Iron Age find complex of Col de Flam (400–15 BC, La Tène period ).

The unique collection of old Val Gardena wooden toys is one of the museum's particularly noteworthy treasures; Compiled by Johann Senoner-Vastlé in the pre-war period, this collection includes an extensive selection of toys that were made at home between 1750 and 1940, including the typical Val Gardena jointed doll in all sizes.

Furthermore, paintings and watercolors by Josef Moroder-Lusenberg , Luis Piazza and Peter Demetz-Fëur are shown.

Luis Trenker

A separate area is dedicated to the native Val Gardena alpinist, actor and director of the first mountain films , Luis Trenker (1892–1990). The Val Gardena Museum has kept his artistic estate since 2004 and shows documents from his filmmaking in a permanent exhibition.
