biography

The daughter of the sculptor and draftsman Stanis (Stanislaus) Gruber (1867–1931) and Theres Demetz was born at the Sulè farm in Ortisei.

As a child she suffered from a disease of the legs and was treated for a few months in the Jesus home in Girlan . Gruber supported this home with financial contributions all her life. She attended the art school in Ortisei, where she was a student of Professor Adolf Keim, her parents' best man.

She was friends with the painter Gustav Jahn . She owned many works by him, which she returned to his family after his early death.

She also attended the art school in Bologna and art academies in Florence and Venice . As a professor, she taught at the Avviamento Commerciale school in the prewar period in Ortisei, then in Merano and at the Scientific Lyceum in Bolzano .

In 1946 in Merano, she co-founded with Max Tosi the Union di Ladins , the first association of the Ladins after fascism.

She wrote the first two textbooks for the Ladin schools and a grammar for the Val Gardena language.

In 1970 she founded an art school in Belém (Pará) that still bears her name.

In S. Cristina in Val Gardena , where she spent her childhood on the Ulëta farm that her mother bought and is now buried, the village library was named after her.
