Olavi Remes

Olavi "Olli" Remes (born September 8, 1909 in Iisalmi , † December 31, 1942 in Krivi ) was a Finnish officer and cross-country skier .

Remes won at the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1934 , the cross-country skiing on the 50-km distance bronze medal . At the 1936 Winter Olympics , he was an officer candidate for the Finnish team in the military patrol demonstration competition and came in second with Eino Kuvaja , Kalle Arantola and Olli Huttunen .

Remes fought in the Winter War from 1939 , later in the Continuation War . On September 12, 1941, when he was already a lieutenant , he was awarded the Mannerheim Cross . Remes died on New Year's Eve 1942 in Krivi, East Karelia, after being fatally hit by a bullet.
