At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1939 , which took place from February 11th to 19th in Zakopane , Poland , three cross-country skiing competitions were held. In the individual competitions, the Scandinavians made up the medals among themselves, in the relay the bronze medal surprisingly went to the Italian team.
In cross-country skiing over 18 km, the Finn Jussi Kurikkala has now also crowned himself individual world champion after his relay gold in 1937 . His compatriot Klaes Karppinen followed in second place, winning his ninth and penultimate World Championship medal. The Norwegian Lars Bergendahl decided the endurance run over 50 km for himself. He won his second gold medal after 1937. Klaes Karppinen was second, and Oscar Gjöslien was third. Finland won the relay race about a minute ahead of Sweden . Surprisingly, the Italians with the South Tyrolean Gottfried Baur in the squad came in third, finishing just before the Norwegians.
