Holte, who started for Hokksund IL , made his first international appearance at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Oslo in 1982 . There he finished 29th over 15 km. In the following year he got his first World Cup points in Kawgolowo with the 11th place over 50 km and in Oslo with the eighth place over 50 km. In his only Olympic participation in February 1984 in Sarajevo , he ran in 20th place over 15 km. In the same month he achieved his first podium in the World Cup with third place in the relay in Falun . His best World Cup season was 1984/85. He came under the top ten four times and thus reached tenth place in the overall World Cup and in Falun with fifth place over 30 km, his best individual result in the World Cup. In addition, as in the previous year, he was third with the relay. At the season highlight, the Nordic World Ski Championships 1985 in Seefeld in Tirol , he finished 20th over 50 km and 18th over 30 km. He completed his last international race at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti in 1989 , which he finished classically in 29th place over 30 km. He won eight medals at Norwegian championships . He was in 1984 and 1986 together with Oddvin Bakkene and his brother Tor Håkon Holte , and in 1985 together with Tor Håkon Holte and Arild Monsen Norwegian champion with the relay of Hokksund IL.
