Iwan Lebanow ( Bulgarian Иван Лебанов , English transcription Ivan Lebanov ; born December 10, 1957 in Gostun , Bansko municipality ) is a former Bulgarian cross-country skier . He won the first Bulgarian medal at the Winter Olympics in 1980 .

life and career

At the age of 18 Lebanow took part in the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria. As the best starter in his country, he took a good 24th place over the distance of 15 kilometers. With the Bulgarian team he was only able to occupy 14th and last place in the relay competition. Four years later at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid , he improved to 15th place over the 15-kilometer distance. In the 30 kilometer competition, he then achieved a sensation that was thought impossible. So he surprisingly won the bronze medal behind the Soviet runners Nikolai Simjatow and Vasily Rotschew . It was the first Olympic medal that a Bulgarian athlete could win at the Winter Olympic Games . In 1977 he won the gold medal over 15 km at the Junior World Championships in Sainte-Croix .

In 1978 Lebanow won the gold medal over the 15-kilometer distance at the Winter Universiade in Špindlerův Mlýn . With the Bulgarian relay he won the bronze medal. In 1981 he triumphed in Jaca in the 30 kilometer competition. Two years later he won the bronze medal and the silver medal over the 15-kilometer distance as well as in the relay competition in front of a home crowd in Sofia . Lebanow's best placement in the cross-country skiing world cup was tenth place over 15 kilometers at the world cup in Le Brassus, Switzerland . This season he also achieved his best place in the overall World Cup with 41st place .
