action

Paul Kersey, who lives with his wife Lucy and college student daughter Jordan, works as a trauma surgeon in a Chicago hospital. After the Kerseys had lunch with Paul's brother Frank, the parking clerk overheard the four of them to meet on Paul's birthday. Miguel then fetches the Kerseys car, but also photographs Paul's address from the sat nav. On the night the Kerseys are supposed to be out, three masked men break into their house. Paul was called to work unexpectedly, so Jordan and Lucy are alone in the house and are shot by the burglars. When Paul is called to the emergency room, he learns that there are two newly admitted women with gunshot wounds, his wife and daughter. Paul's wife Lucy succumbs to her injuries and his daughter is in a coma after an emergency operation. Paul's brother Frank is also present during the questioning by Detective Kevin Raines and his colleague. They learn that there have been six more break-ins in the Kerseys neighborhood in the past nine months and no one has been informed.

Outraged that the police are unable to solve the crime, Paul practices vigilante justice to find the men who attacked his family. When a gang member is rushed to the hospital after being shot, Paul steals his gun after it fell from the table. He goes on to prevent carjacking, which is viral video; Paul is called Chicago's "Grim Reaper". Paul later finds his stolen watch on Miguel's wrist when he is hospitalized. Paul discovers a photo on Miguel's phone with his address. The phone receives a text asking to meet in a bar in the suburbs. At the bar, Paul speaks to the owner, "Ponytail," and says that Miguel sent him. He calls his friend "Fish" and then reaches for his weapon, but Paul stabs his hand with an arrow on the table and forces him to return the stolen things that he stole from Paul's house. "Fish" arrives and accidentally shoots "Ponytail". After he shot "Fish" in the leg in a shooting, Paul steps on his wound to get information. "Fish" then announces that Lucy's shooter is Joe, an auto mechanic who works in a body shop. He kicks Paul in the groin and gains the upper hand, but is accidentally killed by a falling bowling ball. In the workshop, Paul ambushed Joe while he was working under a car. He tortures Joe by cutting his sciatic nerve with a scalpel and pouring brake fluid into the wound. Joe announces that their leader Knox shot Lucy. Paul removes the jack that is raising the car to crush Joe's head.

The hospital informs Paul that Jordan has regained consciousness. At the hospital, Paul tells Jordan what happened to Lucy. After declining a call from an unknown contact, Paul warns a message that the police will be informed of his actions if he doesn't answer the next call. The contact, Knox, orders Paul to meet him in a nightclub washroom. Paul calls Knox's phone number and notices the doorbell ring in a toilet cubicle. He shoots through the closed door only to find it was a ruse. Knox confirms the shooter is Paul, and the two start a shootout that ends with Knox escaping. When Paul returns home, Frank discovers and confronts Paul's weapons collection, but Paul insists on continuing to protect the city.

Knox and two other thugs prepare to break into Paul's house. Paul hides Jordan in a closet under the stairs. After killing the two thugs in the upstairs bedroom, Paul goes into the basement, where he suspects Knox is there. Knox emerges from the darkness and shoots Paul in the shoulder. Before Knox can kill him, Jordan shouts her father's name. Knox mocks Paul, saying the house will go up in flames as he nears Jordan's location. Paul gets an assault rifle from a compartment under a table and shoots Knox. The police then arrive; Detective Raines suspects Paul was the "Grim Reaper" but decides to cover it up as Knox attacked the house believing Jordan could identify him.

Paul later drops Jordan off from university. A radio program playing in the background hopes that wherever the "Grim Reaper" is, he stays outside of society. As Paul leaves, he sees a man stealing a bag from a bellboy.

Reviews

The film received mostly negative reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes , only 17% of 117 rated reviews have been positive. In conclusion, it is said that the film is little more than a “routine retelling” that lacks the “determination” and also the “conviction” of the original. On Metacritic , Death Wish received a Metascore of 32 out of 100 based on 30 reviews.

Christoph Petersen von Filmstarts found that the “lovelessly torn down new edition” left the audience astonishingly cold “despite the currently heated situation”. The "listlessness" of Bruce Willis in the main role is particularly evident. Petersen also wrote that the task of films like Death Wish is precisely to "shock, politically shoot across, to challenge the good taste and ethical well-being of the audience". But even on this "basic technical level" the film fails because director Eli Roth has been acting "with the handbrake on" for too long. Petersen only found some of the “modernization ideas” such as “the excerpts with different real radio presenters” to be successful. As a final rating, he awarded 2 out of 5 stars. The film service wrote that the remake of the “controversial vigilante thriller” from 1974 showed “little interest” in “reinterpreting the material for the present” and failed as a “calculated provocation” as well as “as an exercise, empathy for violent change to wake up the main character ”.
