The house of mysterious clocks (original title The House with a Clock in Its Walls , English for "The house with a clock in its walls") is a mystery horror film by Eli Roth , which was released on September 20, 2018 in German and on hit US cinemas the following day. The film is based on a horror novel of the same name by John Bellairs .

The orphan boy Lewis Barnavelt, who recently lost his parents, is staying with his uncle Jonathan in the small town of New Zebedee, Michigan. The mysterious man is a wizard, as Lewis soon discovers, and his neighbor Florence Zimmerman is a witch. Lewis helps his uncle find a clock hidden somewhere in the house that has the power to wipe out the whole world.

The film is based on a 1973 horror novel written by John Bellairs and illustrated by Edward Gorey . It tells the story of Lewis Barnavelt, who lives with his uncle Jonathan and finds out one day that his uncle and his neighbor are witches looking for a clock that ticks inside the walls of Jonathan's house. In Germany, the book was published under the title The Secret of the Magic Clock , but Heyne is also to republish it under the title The House of Mysterious Clocks .
Directed by Eli Roth , Eric Kripke adapted Bellairs' novel for the film. The score was composed by Nathan Barr .
Jack Black plays Jonathan Barnavelt. Child actor Owen Vaccaro took on the role of 10-year-old Lewis Barnavelt, Jonathan's nephew. Cate Blanchett plays Mrs. Florence Zimmerman, a witch, Jonathan's neighbor and his best friend. Kyle MacLachlan took on the role of sinister original owner of the house, Isaac Izard. Colleen Camp plays Mrs. Hanchett, a confused neighbor of Jonathan and Mrs. Zimmerman.
Filming took place at Atlanta Metro Studios in Union City and Newnan , Georgia, where the film was shot on East Washington Street and Greenville Street. The Parrott-Camp-Soucy House located there, built in the Greek Revival in 1842 and later converted in Victorian style, was painted black for the filming and surrounded by false columns and stones. The film The Miraculous Life of Timothy Green had already been shot there. Rogier Stoffers acted as cameraman .
At the end of March 2018, Universal Pictures presented a first trailer. The film was released in German cinemas on September 20, 2018 and in US cinemas the following day. At the beginning of October 2018 there was a screening at the Sitges Film Festival , later that month at the Festa del Cinema di Roma, where the film was shown in the official competition. The film celebrated its world premiere on September 16, 2018 at the TCL Chinese Theater in Hollywood. On May 24, 2020, he was accepted into the Amazon Prime Video program.

In the United States, the MPAA rated the film as a PG. In Germany it was approved by the FSK from the age of 6. The statement of reasons for the release states: “The film shows a clear drawing of good and bad, whereby the intelligent and brave young hero is suitable as a figure of identification. Some horror film elements and threatening situations can frighten preschoolers, but elementary school children are able to keep their distance. The fairytale setting, the bizarre characters and the good-natured humor offer them sufficient relief. "
In a review by the dpa of the film it is said that the house of mysterious clocks creates a lot of tension and horror and is always very funny. At the same time, the film is also full of clichés, such as ticking clocks, living dolls and threateningly laughing clowns, which are the typical ingredients of a horror film . The film demands a lot from younger viewers, for example when the evil wizard emerges from his crypt or when the killer pumpkins come to life and attack: “No problem for ten-year-olds who have already seen one or the other scary film. More fearful children are likely to have many pictures to cause nightmares. ”In particular, Jack Black and Cate Blanchett made sure that the horror is loosened up again and again, and Black is quick-witted and funny in the role of eccentric Uncle Jonathan.

Lili Hering writes in DerStandard.at about the main location of the film that the house, more haunted mansion than an ordinary home, is better than any fair: "It breathes, creaks, ticks and only welcomes visitors when they like it." Director Eli Roth , usually known for horror films that are not friendly to people and certainly not child-friendly, draws a scary house with humor when the furniture bounces around and a wing chair behaves like a pet, according to Hering. She sums up, Roth tells his first youth-friendly fantasy story with humor and speed, some moments of shock and with attention to detail.
The film's worldwide revenue from theatrical screenings to date is $ 130.6 million. So far, the film has had 295,965 visitors in Germany.
