Michele Bonaglia (born July 5, 1905 in Druent , Piedmont , † March 3, 1944 in Venaria Reale near Turin ) was an Italian boxer . He was European light heavyweight professional boxer champion .

Career

Amateur career

Michele Bonaglia had some successes as an amateur boxer in 1925, when he was only 20 years old. In April 1925 he was in Milan Northern Italian light heavyweight champion with victories over Amedeo Grillo, Capocchi and Nando Tassi. A month later he was in Florence with a points victory in the final over Primo Ubaldi also Italian light heavyweight champion. Shortly afterwards he boxed in Milan in the Italian national team and defeated the Austrian Vybiral from SC Hertha Wien on points in the light heavyweight division. In July 1925 he played another international match in Milan, in which he came to a point victory over Leon Sebilo from France.

Profile career

In the fall of 1925, Michele Bonaglia turned professional. His domicile was Turin. He fought his first fight on September 27, 1925 in Milan and scored a point victory over the Belgian Jean Leroy. He then remained undefeated in 23 fights in a row, scoring 22 wins and one draw.

On June 29, 1926 he was in Rome with a point victory after 15 rounds over Rinaldo Palmucci Italian light heavyweight champion. He defended this title on October 3, 1926 in Milan with a technical knockout victory in the 12th round over Armando de Carolis. He then fought a few fights in Argentina . On March 19, 1927 he fought in a draw in Buenos Aires against the Cuban Kid Charol. On May 22, 1927, he beat the British Frank Moody , who was multiple British Champion and British Empire & Commonwealth Champion, on points in Milan . On July 2, 1927, he defended his Italian championship title in Turin with a points win after 15 rounds over Rinaldo Palmucci again.

On January 6, 1928, Michele Bonaglia boxed against Max Schmeling from Germany in the Schöneberg Sports Palace in Berlin for the European title. The fight did not last long, because Bonaglia lost in the first round against Schmeling by knockout. That was his first defeat as a professional boxer. He then went back to Argentina for a few fights and defeated Kid Charol, against whom he had drawn in a draw the previous year, on points in Buenos Aires. On November 4, 1928 he came in Milan to an impressive point victory over the former Italian heavyweight champion Giuseppe Spalla . In the following years he defeated Spalla twice.

On February 10, 1929, Michele Bonaglia was then European light heavyweight champion when he beat Belgian Jack Etienne , the successor to European champion of Max Schmeling, who had voluntarily given up the European title, after 15 rounds on points in Milan . On June 27, 1929, Michele Bonaglia defended the title with a technical knockout victory in the 4th round over Hein Müller , Germany. On October 12, 1929 he won over the British Gipsy Daniels , who had defeated the aspiring Max Schmeling by knocking out in the 1st round on February 25th, 1928, by knocking out in the 8th round.

On February 26, 1930, Michele Bonaglia successfully defended his European title for the last time in Turin with a points victory over Jack Etienne. He gave up this title a little later without a fight. After that he fought three times against German boxers. On April 11, 1930 he reached a draw in Cologne against Hein Müller, on July 5, 1930 he was defeated in Cologne against Hein Domgörgen on points and on July 5, 1931 he was defeated in Hamburg against the new European light heavyweight champion Ernst Pistulla in a non-title fight Points.

Then he switched to the heavyweight division. In this weight class, he boxed on April 24, 1932 in Genoa against Innozente Baiguera for the Italian championship, but lost by disqualification in the 6th round. Michele Bonaglia fought his last fight on September 26, 1934 in Barcelona and lost to Isidoro Gastanaga by knockout in the first round.

He then worked for an Italian automobile factory in Turin. He also appeared in a feature film called "Il Campione".

Michele Bonaglia was a victim of political power struggles between fascists and partisans. He is said to have been murdered by communist partisans on March 3, 1944.
