Heinrich "Hein" Domgörgen (born December 30, 1898 in Cologne , † April 2, 1972 ibid) was a German boxer . He was the dominant German middleweight of the 1920s.

Career

Domgörgen began his boxer career in the Cologne boxing club SC Colonia 06 . As an amateur, he became German middleweight champion in 1921 and moved to the professional camp in 1922. In his first 63 fights he lost only once, in 1925 against Leo Frick by disqualification.

In November 1925 he won the German championship by knocking out in the third round against Adolf Wiegert . A few months later he tried against the Belgian Rene DeVos to win the European title for the first time, but lost over 15 rounds on points.

On November 6, 1927, there was a meeting with the 22-year-old Max Schmeling in the Leipzig Achilleion . It was about the titles of the German champion and the European light heavyweight champion, the combat exchange was 13,000 marks. It was a particularly explosive duel, as both had trained together in Cologne for a long time before Schmeling's move to Berlin and Schmeling learned a lot from Domgörgen during this time. It was agreed that the winner would receive the entire exchange. In an initially even fight, Schmeling succeeded in the seventh round of the knockout, Domgörgen's first premature defeat.

Then he boxed again in the middleweight division and defended his German championship title in the weight class several times until 1934. Another attempt to become middleweight European champion failed in December 1928 on Leone Jacovacci from Italy .

On July 5, 1930, he defeated the Italian ex-European light heavyweight champion Michele Bonaglia on points in Cologne .

It was not until August 20, 1931 that he finally managed to win the European Championship title against Poldi Steinbach , but then lost to the Austrian by knockout the following year . He also boxed three times against Johann Wilhelm Trollmann in 1931 and 1932 ; He won two matches on points and one match ended in a draw.

From 1933 he lost more and more often, for example against Gustav Eder and Jupp Besselmann in non-title fights. In 1937 he ended his career.

Domgörgen was married to Johanna Lange (1902–1972) from 1924. Almost three months after his wife's death, he passed away at the age of 73.
