The SC Colonia 06 is a Cologne amateur sports club and at the same time the oldest active boxing club in Germany.

history

The SC Colonia 06 was founded on August 6, 1906 by some young men who are enthusiastic about sports. The youngest among them was Josef Bruckmann , who was later chairman and president until his death in 1948 . The club initially devoted itself to cycling and athletics . The Englishman Jack Slim, who lives in Cologne, aroused the enthusiasm of club members for boxing, which was initially officially banned throughout Germany until 1918. Notwithstanding this ban, two club members became German champions in 1912, and boxing became the club's main sport.

1921 Colonia boxer was Hein Domgörgen German Amateur champion in middleweight . Its popularity helped boxing and the club to gain special recognition, and people spoke of the "Cologne School". In 1924 Max Schmeling was part of the association for a short time, as he was living and working in Cologne at the time. During these years, the SC Colonia 06 relay was the most successful in Germany. Up to 80 boxers took part in a training session. In 1927 three boxers from the club - Franz Dübbers , Jakob Domgörgen and Hein Müller (the "triumvirate") - returned to Cologne from the European boxing championships in Berlin with three titles, followed by Jupp Besselmann in 1930 . In 1931, Jakob Domgörgen's brother Hein , who also grew up as a boxer in SC Colonia 06 , became European professional champion . The period up to 1931 was the most successful period of the association to date.

After the end of the Second World War , the training first took place in a destroyed school, sports equipment and gloves were made by themselves. Boxing events took place in the courtyard of the school, although they were banned after a young spectator fell from the roof on which he had climbed to save the entrance fee. In 1960 the club members August Engel (flyweight) and Kurt Schlaudraf (feather) became German champions and Heinz Wachendorf were runner-up.

Today (as of 2014) SC Colonia 06 has around 500 members, making it one of the largest amateur boxing clubs in Europe. Of the 150 active athletes, including women, 50 regularly take part in championships and competitions. The coaching staff consists of eight licensed instructors who used to be successful boxers themselves. The club provided a total of 73 German champions (until 2014) and numerous German runners-up in various weight and age classes as well as four European champions, one youth world champion and one youth Olympic champion (2010 in Singapore). Training takes place in the Müngersdorf Box Gym , in the west building of the Rheinenergiestadion .

In 2014, SC Colonia 06 was awarded the “Green Ribbon for exemplary promotion of talent in the club” as the most successful youth and junior club of the German Boxing Association .
