Franz Dübbers (born April 8, 1908 in Cologne ; † August 1987 there ) was a German boxer .
Franz Dübbers was a member of SC Colonia 06 , which is the oldest active amateur boxing club in Germany. In the 1920s in particular, the club produced numerous successful boxers such as Dübbers, Jakob Domgörgen and Hein Müller , all of whom returned from the European Championship in 1927 with gold medals. In 1924 Max Schmeling was also a member of the club for a short time and was trained by Dübbers' older brother Adolf.
Dübbers was German champion in 1924 (up to 51 kg), 1925 (up to 54 kg), 1926, 1927 (both up to 57 kg) and 1928 (up to 60 kg).
1925 Franz Dübbers was after a final defeat by Archie Rule vice European champion in the bantamweight . Two years later he won the European featherweight title in Berlin . In 1928 he took part in the Olympic Summer Games in Amsterdam in the lightweight class. He was considered one of the favorites, but was surprisingly eliminated in the second round against the Pan-American champion of 1926 Pascual Bonfiglio ( Argentina ).
Dübbers fought his first professional fight on February 1, 1929 in the Rhineland Hall in Cologne , where he was to fight numerous other fights until the end of his sports career in 1936. He lost to French Pierre Calloir (whose last fight it was), but won a month later in the same place against Italian Gino Giacomelli . In 1931 he became German lightweight champion against Paul Czirson in Dortmund's Westfalenhalle . In 1933 he boxed in Caracas against the Puerto Rican Pedro Montañez for the title of international lightweight champion from Venezuela and lost. On January 11, 1936, Dübbers fought his last fight against compatriot Dan Schink in the Rhineland Hall ; the fight ended in a draw.
