Newnan is a city and also the county seat of Coweta County in the US state of Georgia with 33,039 inhabitants (as of 2010).
geography
Newnan is about 25 miles southwest of Atlanta .
history
In the early 1800s, the area around what is now Newnan was still inhabited by Indians. The Muskogee tribe was led by a chief named William McIntosh .
Coweta County was founded in 1825. In 1828 the city of Newnan was founded and made a county seat . The city was named after the soldier and later politician Daniel Newnan .
Newnan developed into a very prosperous area through the cotton industry and railroad construction. The railroad reached the city in 1851. The waterworks was built in the 1890s and electric street lights were installed at the same time.
The Civil War reached Newnan in July 1864, when Union forces were defeated by Confederate forces led by General Joseph Wheeler at the Battle of Brown's Mill three miles south of the city . The city itself was spared from the effects of the war.
Demographic data
According to the 2010 census, the then 33,039 inhabitants were distributed over 12,439 inhabited households, which gives an average of 2.61 people per household. There are a total of 13,860 households.
67.5% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring) with an average size of 3.17 persons. There were children under the age of 18 in 40.1% of all households and persons aged 65 and over in 17.9% of all households.
30.5% of the population were younger than 20 years, 32.6% were 20 to 39 years old, 23.2% were 40 to 59 years old, and 13.5% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 32 years. 47.5% of the population were male and 52.5% were female.
58.9% of the population identified themselves as whites , 30.2% as African American , 0.3% as Indians and 2.6% as Asian Americans . 5.2% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 2.8% to several ethnic groups. 11.0% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .
The average annual income per household was 51,693 USD , while 20.4% of the population lived below the poverty line.

Newnan is crossed by Interstate 85 , US Highways 27A and 29, and Georgia State Routes 16 , 34 and 70 . The local Newnan – Coweta County Airport is located approximately 10 km south of the city. The nearest international airport is Atlanta Airport (around 40 km northeast).

The crime rate in 2010 was 287 points (US average: 266 points) in the average range. There were two murders, one rape, 32 robberies, 96 assaults, 302 break-ins, 859 thefts and 55 car thefts.
