Tommi Mäkinen (born June 26, 1964 in Puuppola, rural municipality Jyväskylä , Finland ) is a former Finnish rally driver . He was four times world rally champion, won the famous Monte Carlo Rally four times and won the Finnish Rally Finland (1000 Lakes Rally) five times . Tommi Mäkinen ended his career in 2003 and currently lives in Jyväskylä County .

Career

Mäkinen won the Finnish rally championship with a Lancia Delta HF 4WD in 1988 . He won the first World Rally Championship round in Finland in 1994 in a Ford Escort RS Cosworth. Mäkinen joined Mitsubishi in 1995 and in 1996 he won the first of four consecutive world titles from 1996 to 1999 with a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo III . In 2002 Mäkinen joined the Subaru World Rally Team, replacing Richard Burns . He won the Monte Carlo Rally for the fourth time and finished eighth in the overall standings. Mäkinen also competed for Subaru in the 2003 season . He lost his best form and ended his career in the Rally Great Britain on the podium in third place.
