The Rallye Sanremo is a rally event that takes place near Sanremo in northern Italy. With an interruption in 1995, the rally was part of the World Rally Championship from 1973 to 2003 . The rally is currently part of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge and the Italian Rally Championship .

history

The first rally event, called “Rallye Sanremo”, was held in 1928. The so-called Rallye Internazionale di Sanremo was inspired by the Rallye Monte Carlo and therefore had the French word “rallye” instead of the Italian “rally” in its name. After it was held again in 1929, the event was placed in the hands of new organizers. They decided to organize a purely street race that led through the narrow streets of the city of Sanremo. At the first event in 1937, the 1 ° Circuito Automobilistico Sanremo , the Italian Grand Prix driver Achille Varzi was able to enter the list of winners. The Second World War ended this racing event.

It was not until 1961 that the original rally in Sanremo was revived as the Rallye dei Fiori (German: "Rally of Flowers"). The first overall winner was the Italian Mario De Villa in an Alfa Romeo Giulietta . In 1968 the rally had "Sanremo" in its name again and ended with a victory for Pauli Toivonen in a Porsche 911 . From 1970 to 1972 the rally was part of the International Championship for Manufacturers , a forerunner series of the World Rally Championship . In 1972 the rally got its current name. Officially, however, the event in 1972 was the 14th, as some previous events were included in the count.

When the World Rally Championship was founded in 1973, the Sanremo Rally was added to its calendar and was an integral part of this series in the following years. The first World Championship round in Sanremo ended with a victory for Jean-Luc Thérier on an Alpine A110 . A controversial decision was made during the 1986 Sanremo Rally, when the leading Peugeot factory team was disqualified after the third day of the rally, so that victory fell to Lancia . The stewards had found irregular side skirts on the Peugeots during the technical inspection . But Peugeot had already contested several other World Championship rallies in this vehicle configuration and also passed the technical inspection before the Sanremo Rally without any complaints. Peugeot protested, but the organizer did not allow the Peugeots to participate. At the end of the year, the FIA decided that the exclusion had been irregular and canceled all championship points that had been awarded for the result of the Sanremo Rally.

Due to the rotation principle of the World Rally Championship at that time, the Sanremo Rally in 1995 was only part of the 2-liter World Cup . The rally, which had previously taken place on various road surfaces, was redesigned in 1997 to a purely asphalt rally. After the 2003 season, the Sanremo Rally was removed from the calendar of the World Rally Championship; Sébastien Loeb won the last world championship run in the Citroën Xsara WRC . The Rally Sardinia was the new Italian round of the World Rally Championship . The Sanremo Rally then lived on as a run to the Italian Rally Championship . In 2006, the rally was also included in the calendar of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge and thus received international attention again. The Sanremo Rally is now mainly a national event.

Routing and characteristics

The rally will take place in the steep hinterland around Sanremo in the province of Imperia . The paddock is usually located directly between the famous casino and the marina on Sanremo's Riviera coast .

After driving on mixed road surfaces until 1996, the Sanremo Rally has been held as a pure asphalt rally since 1997. The rally is characterized by narrow mountain roads with inclines and declines in the Mediterranean mixed oak and deciduous forests. These are characterized by a wealth of curves and a technically demanding route. As a result, the route only allows a relatively low average speed.

After its cancellation in 1985 was special stage Ronde di Monte Bignone or short Ronde 2005 included in the program of the Sanremo Rally again. It has been the highlight of the event ever since. This is a night stage which, with a distance of 44 kilometers, is one of the longest special stages in the world. It passes the municipalities of Perinaldo , Apricale and Bajardo as well as Sanremo's Coldirodi and San Romolo fractions .

Overall winner

The record winner of the Sanremo Rally is the Italian Paolo Andreucci with six successes in the period from 2006 to 2018. Four drivers were able to win the rally three times during the World Championship round. Markku Alén (1978, 1983, 1986), Miki Biasion (1987, 1988, 1989), Didier Auriol (1990, 1991, 1994) and Gilles Panizzi (2000, 2001, 2002) are the record winners of the Sanremo Rally with World Championship status.
